Jung-hoo's countless list of feels: Episode 6

Helloooooooooo, Healer-ya? Ah don’t you just love Ahjumma and her random phone intrusions. And as funny as we find the dynamics between the two, there’s a certain tinge of sadness it evokes when we realise that Healer-ya has yet to meet the person on the other end of the line, not once having seen her face. It’s one of the reasons I love the way Jung-hoo chooses to communicate with Yong-Shin – always keeping her within range, and within his line of sight – it’s a confirmation of her presence on the other end of the line, and the fact that she’s real.

The moment he receives her text messages he reads them with a look of incredulity. It’s that fine line between what he’s come to expect and the unexpected which keeps him rooted on the spot, causing him to linger over the message time and time again until he works up to a decisive form of action. In hindsight, it’s not just her likeness to ahjumma which most likely has him tickled, but also the way in which she’s come to shower Bong-soo with concern which has him equally amused, so much so, that he takes great pleasure in imagining to himself how she must sound by imitating her voice out loud. His smile confirms the fondness he’s developed for her voice, notably, the way in which she fusses over him. And though he’s getting that attention as Bong-soo, there’s something heart-warming in the way that he receives it as the everyday Jung-hoo, who’s at home lounging casually. Technically, he’s able to switch off from being Bong-soo when within the confines of his own space, but the fact that he keeps his phone (false identity) switched on, shows that he’s willing to let Yong-shin in, making himself readily available to her.

The last line of her message is the one which leaves him feeling most conflicted – “I feel like dying right now”. As he replays that message in his head, the look of amusement fades, and is replaced with sincere concern, anxiety which spurs him into action. Her being an open book when it comes to conversing with him is a type of honesty and trust that Jung-hoo has perhaps never experienced or is most unfamiliar with. Yong-shin’s frankness in expressing whatever she feels is not only refreshing to him, but also unexpected, in that it deviates from his usual calculations of people – hesitant, indecisive and predictable. Her messages to him are not just filled with one sided concern, but are instead, reciprocal, inviting him to share the weight of her anxieties, needing solace herself. The fact that she’s comfortable enough to want to share her pain with Bong-soo establishes their relationship on mutual grounds, whereby Jung-hoo too becomes a pillar of support for somebody, as opposed to just himself. Recognising that, he obliges most faithfully and goes to her immediately, not out of curiosity, but a sense of personal duty.

I love the fact that the moment he calls her, his voice takes on the persona of Bong-soo – timid and a little reserved, but the moment he’s done with the excuses, he reverts back to informal speech, completely in Jung-hoo mode. As soon as she asks whether he’s listening, he’s all ears.  Him, lending an ear is completely Jung-hoo, showing the concern to be real and honest. He doesn’t beat around the bush and nor does he seem bothered that she’s caught him out on the informal speech. His main priority is to hear her out, and to let her vent her frustrations. And for that, he chooses to retain his original identity. As if that were not transparent enough, he swiftly closes the distance between them, moving closer to her so that he can see her face, for hearing her voice alone is not enough for him it seems. It’s that need for verification – that she’s there, on the other end of the line. For him, that connection is important, and a beautiful one at that. For how easy would it have been to have her talk to him whilst he’s elsewhere, getting on with other things. Instead, he chooses to direct his full attention to her, not skipping a single beat with regards to her concerns. He enquires after them all, like a true friend would, and more, making sure to align each and every sentiment to her facial expressions which are so clearly visible to him.

I love that even though he’s in a position to read her like an open book, she still manages to take his breath away. Again, it’s that unpredictable nature of Yong-shin which catches Jung-hoo, and along with him, the rest of us off guard too. The moment she confesses to having a one sided-crush on the “night-time errand boy”, her second unrequited love, you can literally feel the wave of emotions going off in Jung-hoo’s mind. Here, his expressions do all the work as they capture his inner state perfectly; for along with him, we too feel the skipping of a heartbeat, the “dugun dugun” racing of a heart, the building excitement whilst connecting all the dots and the after-shock tremors of letting it all sink in – he felt them all within a matter of seconds. Unaware to Yong-shin, this is the impact she has on Jung-hoo.

In essence, it was the perfect yin and yang moment, for his inner state captured all that her outer state revealed; and the fact that he was there to witness first hand just how giddy he makes her feel must have increased his emotions two-fold, an indication that when he falls for her, he’s going to fall hard. The smile he gives upon hearing how comfortable he makes her feel shows that his feelings have already reached a stage whereby he wants to be acknowledged by her, and that he's not just an "anybody" - of course, for Bong-soo, that means being relegated to the position of a sister, lol. But, It's nice to think that at this stage, the level of comfort they have which allows them to talk so freely, is what makes Jung-hoo so happy.

  5. Namedx….clap..clap..clap… You did it again.  A beautiful written chapter 6 feels.  Besides the WTH look, I love his “little not feeling right but not quite there jealous” look when he saw her expression at the mention of Moo Ho’s name.   I guess he is still trying to understand his “new found” feelings.  I just rewatched this eps on Thursday, so you must be reading my mind. ;) Thx JCW Mesmerizing Eyes
